UNTWIST has generated a wealth of data from the UNTWIST camelina diversity panel, which includes cultivars, breeding lines and landraces from different geographical regions. Genome sequencing of the 54 genotypes showed that the UNTWIST core collection represents the known genetic diversity of camelina. Field trials in Spain, Italy, France, and UK characterized the camelina diversity panel with regard to the adaptability to specific local environmental and stressful conditions based on agronomic parameters. In controlled experiments, physiological and growth parameters as well as the metabolic response to heat and drought stress conditions were analyzed. The trials showed that camelina can mitigate the effects of drought and heat ensuring stable seed and oil yields. Camelina demonstrated significant plasticity which varied between the different lines. This allows specific ideotypes to be selected or identified for different geographical locations and environments. The comprehensive dataset including genomic, physiological, metabolic, and agronomic data is now further evaluated as a basis for machine-learning models and genetic and metabolic markers.
